July 07 The End......It was a tearful departure from Shanghai as I hopped into a cab bound for the airport. I'm already beginning to miss my student life in China, but I do understand that one should never overindulge in a "journey of a lifetime" - its time to face reality.
My last week in Shanghai was spent taking final exams, shopping for cheesy souveniors, and visiting friends. After my exams, Jung Hoon, Mira and I went to the clothing market to do a bit of last minute shopping. To my surprise, Jung Hoon is a tough bargainer. I think he may even fall in the ranks with Mira. He tried to teach me a few tricks and apparently I applied them so well, I got slapped on the butt by the saleslady. She said my bargainning skills were "too good." I should have asked for an additional discount. j/k
I've also been spending a lot of time at the post office. I gathered a bunch of coats, shoes, and my dinosaur to send home. While I was filling out the mailing labels, I got yelled at from the clerk for writing my address in Shanghai incorrectly. My response was, "at least I'm in the ballpark." Apparently, I added one too many dots and forgot a few strokes. He gave me a chuckle and I laughed. Its instances like these that I will always look back upon and smile.
As I close this chapter in my life, I think it is only appropriate to reflect upon the lessons I've learned within the past year.
- Screaming and throwing a tantrum can make one's life much easier in China. If you can't get yourself to act like a looney, find yourself a Mira :) I'm only kidding. My roommate has been nothing short of wonderful this semester.
- Stepping outside of our comfort zone is a priceless lesson. It is not until we push ourselves to the edge that we realize the capacity of our strength to weather life's many perils and pitfalls.
- Communicating in elementary level Chinese does not hinder one's ability to develop strong affection for the other sex, even if he is from an entirely different background, country, or planet. In fact, it is very possible. Don't pry or ask additional questions :) This is just a lesson learned. Perhaps I saw it occur on the big screen :)
- The two events that differentiates me from the children I teach at the migrant school are 1) I was fortunate enough to be born in the U.S. and 2) I was given the opportunity to learn. I believe we are all dealt different cards in life, but sometimes I can't help but feel that I've received the Royal Flush while these kids are holding onto a No Hand in the game of Russian Poker. I have yet to reconcile these feelings, but I do believe it is important to recognize and appreciate the opportunities we are presented as Americans.
- Life is about taking chances, whether that is meeting a new individual, quiting/starting a new job, enrolling in school, etc... Give yourself the chance to succeed. You will probably crash and burn along the way, but that only makes success so much sweeter. We miss any shot at success when we fail to take the first step.
My immediate plans for the summer are - 1) be an amazing tour guide to Mira as she is staying with me for the week 2) take a cruise south of the border in celebration of Van's b-day and 3) visit my cousin in Florida. My long-term plan is to continue learning. We live in an immeasurable world and I've only touched the tip of it.
Thank you for taking the time to read my last entry.
June 30 .........Friends I just got home from dinner with my friends. It is perhaps our last get together before my departure on the fourth. I'm feeling a bit sentimental and its starting to hit me that I am about to close yet another chapter in my life. I feel very fortunate that we had the opportunity to cross paths. It would have been a very lonely year had I not made any friends. Perhaps, since I'm still feeling warm and fuzzy inside, I should say something nice to each and every one of them. Evan - thank you for being my buddy in Shanghai. My time here would have been much different without you. There would be no one to make fun of Shrek, accompany me to the hospital, and provide me with an endless pool of eligible bachelors. I am sure you will miss me :) Thomas - I could have sworn you were this kind and polite fellow, but after our Beijing trip, I've come to realize that you're just like Evan. The only difference is, Evan openly rants about others' stupidity, whereas you keep it to yourself. hehehe....I'm kidding. I think you may actually be the most thoughtful guy I know. Thank you for picking out our gifts. Mira and I truly appreciate it! Ally - Thank you for patience. I know Mira and I can get out of control sometimes, but we're grateful that you always accept our invitation to hangout. Please watch out for Evan, he may be a bad influence on Thomas. Li Dan - I've learned quite a bit of Chinese from you. (i.e. sexy, back pretty/front ugly...etc). It will be very useful in picking up men. I think it may actually be one of the most important words/phrases I've learned in China. Chester - Good luck w/ the job hunt! if all goes sour (which I highly doubt) you now have a couple useful phrases to pickup women or men (jk) in China :) Also, no more fights in bars.......and if does happen, hold onto your glasses. Thank you for the laughs and best wishes in your future endeavors. Also, if you're not already married (Chester), please invite me to your wedding. AND.....if you have a shot-gun wedding, please fill me in on the gossip.
